Sharing stories on stage at The Moth
Hi, I’m Heather.
It All Starts With a Story
Hey there, I’m Heather. I’m a communication coach, a storyteller, and a firm believer that the most powerful tool you have in your business is something you already own: your stories.
You know that feeling when you hear a story that just clicks? It’s not polished or perfect, but it’s real. It moves you. That’s the magic I help entrepreneurs like you tap into. It’s about connecting with a genuine part of yourself and sharing it in a way that builds a bridge to your audience. They see themselves in your story, they trust you, and they want to be part of your world.
My Journey into Storytelling
My own story took a turn when I picked up Matthew Dicks' book, Storyworthy. I was hooked. I didn't just want to learn about storytelling; I needed to understand how to find, craft, and share the kinds of stories that make people lean in. Soon, I was attending his book launches, joining his masterminds, and telling my own stories on stage at The Moth and Matt’s storytelling event, Speak Up.
The experience was transformative. I saw people from all walks of life—not professional performers, just regular people—share five-minute stories that were funny, heartbreaking, and deeply human. It proved to me that you don’t need to be a "professional" to be a great storyteller. You just need to be you.
This journey led me to become a coach and mentor in Matthew Dicks' Storyworthy community—the first person he’s trusted to coach under his name. It’s an honor I don’t take lightly, and it fuels my mission to help others find their voice.
It’s More Than Just Business
Storytelling isn't just a business strategy; it's a way to connect more deeply with your own life. One of the most powerful moments for me was watching a video of one of my Moth stories with my parents. It was about a difficult time in our lives, one we’d never really talked about. Seeing my 85-year-old, flip-phone-carrying dad ask me to email him the video so he could watch it again showed me the true power of a story. It creates understanding and healing.
That's why I'm so passionate about this work. I help you mine for your “connection currency”—the gold gems from your life experiences—and build a personalized $torybank. This becomes your priceless resource for everything from keynotes and sales meetings to social media posts and newsletters. More than that, you develop a "storytelling lens" that changes how you communicate in every area of your life.
From Restaurant Rushes to the "Shoelace Effect"
I’ve been connecting with people my whole life. I owned a bustling from-scratch restaurant, bakery, and market in a small mountain town where I learned to regularly entertain lines of "hangry" customers, remembering names and orders while running food and making jokes. Before that, I was the one on the Division 1 field hockey team bus doing Jim Carrey impressions on the microphone to make my teammates laugh.
My friends joke about what they call the “shoelace effect”—my ability to walk up to a stranger and find common ground. ("You have a shoelace? I have a shoelace! We should be friends!") It’s just how I’m wired. I see the best in people and love creating spaces where they can explore, expand, and transform.
This knack for connection is backed by years of coaching experience. I’m a certified NLP Practitioner, Life Coach, and Breath-Body-Mind Coach. I’ve also been a professional organizer, helping people clear out the clutter in their homes—and, just as importantly, in their minds. In organizing, I learned firsthand that stuff is just stuff until there’s a story behind it. One of my favorite moments was when a friend and I were cleaning out her barn. I tried to toss a rusty shovel head with a broken handle, but she stopped me and said, “Oh no, that’s a keeper.” She then told me the story: years ago, she’d babysat for a couple who’d just had a baby, and the parents gave her this very shovel—decorated with a painted spade—as a thank-you. Every season, she placed that shovel in her garden and remembered how that night with the baby inspired her to start a family of her own. The twist? That baby was me. Almost fifty years later, that rusty shovel is rich in meaning because of its story, and now, I want to keep it too.
I know that the stories we tell ourselves create our outer world. My job is to help you align your inner stories with your outer goals, so you can show up authentically, connect deeply, and get the results you want.
